In 1979 John Shafer founded Shafer Vineyards in the Stags Leap District of Napa. A blend of 97% Syrah & 3% Petite Sirah, notably small PS% which varies each year. The work of Elias Fernandez, fruit from La Mesa Vineyard, a ridgetop of shallow soils & volcanic ash. Stunning red with full black fruit aromas and pepper spice with floral edge. On the palate blackberry flavors, spice, oak and earthy notes. Big fine tannins, vivid acidity, good balance on lingering finish ending with cacao tones. Will cellar well. — 8 years ago
Great with our Mexican meal at Toucan Resort. Definite do over. I hope they have it at the LCBO in Ontario. — 9 years ago

Barnyard, cherries, pie crust, red currant with layers upon layers on the lifted nose. You could just sit and smell this wine and be satisfied. Smokey cedar with juicy red fruits on the palate. Rich and smooth with balance and finesse. Excellent Pinot! — 11 years ago
medium lemon yellow with watery rim; grapefruit, lime, honeydew melon; lime, slightly saline, finishes with a bit of phenolic bitterness; light bodied, medium+ acidity, 12.5% ABV — 6 years ago
@Benjamin Keator had his hosting at the CC tonight and it was absolutely incredible. What a night of gorgeous wines! All wines are guessed blind.
This dessert wine is about the same age as my Dad. When you can associate a wine/vintage personally, it really opens your eyes to how wine can hold. This is undoubtedly Pedro Ximenez, which I guessed. It reminds me of a non-vintage port with a balsamic mix to it. Tons of black licorice, old brown sugar, and the aforementioned balsamic vinaigrette note. Incredible for the age. — 7 years ago

Great bold wine. Smoother than most reds I have had from Argentina. Similar to a spicey Cab with a peppery finish. — 11 years ago

Tart, dry. Actually decent — 8 years ago
Smooth, but enticing nose.
Black fruit, and vanilla beans on a luscious, silky note. A little tobacco at the end, just to balance the fruit. Loving it! — 9 years ago
Nice and crisp. — 10 years ago
Exceptional nose, red fruit forward, high quality and dense rich flavors. Mineralality lingering mid pallet. Castello di Amorosa is referred to as the Disneyland of Napa Valley. They have a wine for every price point but not enough attention is paid to their upper end wines. Exceptional 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷 — 10 years ago
Crisp start kind of like cranberry then a nice licorice oaken finish... Unique! — 11 years ago
Sicilian wine from the base of Mount Etna. 95% Nerello Mascalese, 5% Nerello Cappuccio. Soft but chalky, earthy, more low tones, herbaceous but not too much. Medium body, slight rhubarb, but again- not in the way wines can be when they are too young to drink. Really lovely wine. Apparently, the winery is no longer making wine due to lack of interest from the family heirs. — 12 years ago
