Quinta do Noval

Maria Mansa Douro Red Blend 2008

My first experience of Portuguese wine , as for most people my age was fortified Port. Amazing that the same flavour DNA is so strong with this Dry Red without the high alcohol. Savoury dry cherry with liquorice. Drink now or cellar short term. — 8 years ago

1995: Deep color. Impact of fruit less dynamic. Traditional Hermitage dna sequencing of flavor, with the bretty sweaty leather that only truly wears well on a Rhone. Not on par with the great vintages, yet this remains a label to hold one's respectful attention. — 10 years ago

Estate Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Such mature, refined flavour from oh-so-young vines. Outrageously good from Plumpjack DNA, could go for 10+ years. — 10 years ago

Mount Pleasant Wines

Maurice O'Shea Hunter Valley Shiraz 2000

Certainly has the Hunter DNA even though Head Winemaker Jim Chatto said Mt Pleasant spent much of the 2000s trying to make a ripe South Australian style (see my 2005 note). Medium bodied earthy savoury and minerally. From vines planted in 1880. Another great vintage for OShea. — 9 years ago

#algueira #galicia #merenzao #pintxos #donosti this for me is an example of when freshness, bright acidity and spicy aromas are part of a wine's dna and not fake or forced by stem ferments or partial carbonic maceration. Real Atlantic character here — 9 years ago

Maison Pierre Overnoy Arbois Pupillin 2010 Chardonnay

Smoky, golden, honey, hints at Amber in colour. The sediment that you usually find down the side of old(ish) reds seems in-flux here, as you lift the bottle to the light the sediment shifts like a vinous DNA strand, a rare sight.
Nose is subtle but with plenty of depth. Quince jelly, smoky honey, curry leaf, apple/treacle/pecan tart, apple sauce but with an overriding, roughhewn rockiness to its character.
In the mouth there is complexity but it's more about texture and mouthfeel than well defined fruits. Although this is mineral, refreshing with high acidity there is an incredibly appealing richness too. Monolithic is not a word that I would often use for a wine but it seems to sit well here, there are few contours or subtle intricacy. It will be fascinating to see how this ages

Vigne e Vini Varvaglione

Primitivo del Salento 2012

Raspberry and blackberry nose with slight rose petal notes. Pomegranate red colour. Medium body with well balanced red and black berry fruit sweetness and acidity (medium plus). Mouthwatering juicy and tangy mouthfeel. On the palate is a ripe red raspberry and blackberry platter with features of ripe cherries and a medium minus feature of french oak foundation. Well structured acidity and fruit with medium minus presence of tannins. Personable of low sweetness strawberry purée from a weathered cedar plank goblet. This is an excellent Italian competitor of a Paso Robles Californian Zinfandel with shared DNA structure ( overseas family). Enjoy with pulled pork nachos or chipotle chicken with smoked cheddar pizza. — 10 years ago

Veliko Bianco (Belo) 2004

Upon opening: acidic, austere. Many hours later: generous, rich, hints of common cab/Merlot elements with underlying Slovenian DNA. Lesson learned. Open early and don't suggest to a napa cab distributor. — 11 years ago
