50 Junmai Daiginjo Yamaguchi Sake

This sake is in a tough spot. Overshadowed by its big brother 23, and conversely ripped on by some tasters because it is Dassai. Judging it merely on taste and quality it is outstanding. Guava, apricot, some stewed bamboo shoots and a touch of black licorice. A touch on the sweet side but very balanced, and a precise dry finish.

I feel it is Dassai's best offering.

Another anniversary, another bottle of '04 Champagne (not that I'm complaining). A unique Blanc de Blanc that has a color almost reminiscent of Mountain Dew (yes, that yellow). Biscuit dough, green apple, green pears and a flinty minerality greet the nose. Sharp acidity and a strong minerality flash through the palette, followed by candied apple and yeasty dough. The balance seems a bit off, but that doesn't take away from the sheer enjoyment of this Champ. The lingering finish will have you thinking about this wine long after you've sipped. — 10 years ago

Very pale yellow. Nose is expressive with apples, orange blossoms, honey dew melon, and just a blade of lemon grass. It's medium to full bodied with a silky mouthfeel, but it's still zingy and lively as hell. An explosion of tart apples and lemon lollipop command the palate, with mineral and fresh garden herbs. It finishes tart but with a heavy coating that lets the flavors linger. — 9 years ago

Youthful but already giving a lot, this is the greatest Baracca produced so far, and likely ever. Astonishing aromatic complexity on the nose where grilled Meyer lemons, honey dew melon, autumn pear and papaya fruit are complemented by oriental spice, loads of greenish herbs and wet chalky soil additions. On the palate, it wraps you in a luxury cashmere blanket where hints of barrel tannins add depth to the lush, perfectly ripe lemons and juicy green apple flavors, expanding in a rarely seen fashion. Multi-layered and crazy long, this sets a new standard not only for Miani and the region as such, but also for the variety, as this sort of complexity arrives very seldom and when it does, it usually addresses Burgundy's finest Crus. Amazing length bringing freshly squeezed lemon juice and chalky spice,, adding lift and sincere interest. Surpassing any Chardonnay in my life, so far. 100 p. — 10 years ago
