My cab franc binge continues, and this one ranks among the best Cab francs I've ever had. @Carl Fischer and I are "cab franc nerds" (a smaller group of the Wine Nerd Herd crew 😂), and we agreed to introduce each other to our favorite cab francs. This was my first from his batch and I wonder if the bar is now set too high! If I had to summarize this wine, it would be that everything is in sync. All the pieces feel well aligned and brought together appropriately. Initially, I want to talk about the nose...that oiled leather, pepper, currants and vanilla, but then I go back to the beautiful acidity, texture, medium bodied, rush of blackberries, plum and floral notes. I keep going back and forth. Feel like that's the signature of a great wine...you can't decide which component is your favorite. @Pam Starr , this is a beautiful wine. Carl, you are off to a hot start my friend. Looking forward to seeing how the Detert shows! — 7 years ago
@Shay Aldriedge : agreed. So little time, guess we better get after it! What's the scoop on the Wine Nerd Herd? A few of us here in the Twin Cities have a strong Vino bond and wide eclectic palates...we'd love to hear more about WNH.
@Michael Mathews : The Wine Nerd Herd is a group of people on here who occasionally meet up to crack open some killer bottles (and send each other bottles of wine to try in the interim). Most people live all over the US and will all fly to wherever the event is, and most have been friends for quite a while. After all, wine is always much more enjoyable when sharing and experiencing it with others! Sounds like y'all have a version of the WNH up in the Twin Cities!
When my reference point for truly great Napa Cabernet Franc is Detert Family (To Kalon Vineyard) everything else will necessarily come short. — 7 years ago
This is one of the better cab francs I've had (though I need to try Detert on @Carl Fischer's recommendation). La Jota is becoming a favorite of mine...shouldn't be surprised as I'm a die-hard Howell Mountain fan. No traces of green pepper at all with this...got a nose of very slight toasted oak and blackberries. Long legs and a gorgeous purple ring/black core. Plum and cinnamon on the tongue. I'll take some more please. 👌 — 7 years ago
It had been opened a day or so. A dark and stormy franc - lots going on and where the aromas gave up a bit with air the palate was strong - forestry and with great length. Consistently a classic expression the the heart and history of Oakville's deep west side. — 9 years ago
