It’s hard to focus on this when there’s that. Despite my SQN gawking, this was a real surprise. I had previously tasted the 2011 vintage shortly after it made Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list in 2013, but my recollection of it was that of a simple, juicy, fruit forward style that was notable for its balance and refreshing style. This vintage is a completely different animal. The sultry savory smokiness does its best to disguise its pure red cherry fruit, but it’s a purity and a concentration that can’t be held down. Not only does this have length, the cumbrous confluence of flavors are somehow precision tailored to a seamless finish, the end of which is difficult to pinpoint. — 8 years ago
Gap's Crown Vineyard benefits from the confluence of Sonoma Mountain, Crane Canyon, and a series of hills to its northwest that create a fog pocket. The vineyard enjoys a lengthier ripening season due to this trapped fog, resulting in low yields and longer hangtime.
Despite its initial reticence, there's depth, body, and complexity for those with patience... hits its stride at 3 hours with a rusty black cherry, walnut, fennel, and underbrush, all wrapped in warm, but discreet oak. — 8 years ago

A bit more spice and confluence of flavors than the blockbuster '10...one if the best I've tried from a 2011 vintage that sometimes comes up short. — 10 years ago

2001 Sine Qua Non "On Your Toes" California Syrah, 14.9% alcohol.
So a few weeks ago, I was pontificating about the SQN G.O.A.T. Syrah on an Jeb Dunnuck Instagram post af “Heart Chorea.” I suggested a 4-way tie among “Heart Chorea,” “Poker Face,” “JFTLOI” And “The 17th Nail.” I was sorely tempted to add “A Shot In The Dark” but then Mark Christensen mentioned adding “On Your Toes,” and I couldn’t even remember the last time I’d tasted it. So Mark, you’re responsible for tonight’s selection. Oh, and by the way, it’s now a 5-way tie because this wine is simply off the charts extraordinary. And I know I’m beginning to sound like a broken record on this topic, but that nose!!! Filing the decanter just floods the cellar with a robust bouquet of hot blueberry pie, strawberry preserves, soy sauce, smoked meats, beef blood, Asian spice, white pepper and lavender. Once in the stem, add shaved truffles and mocha frappe to the mix. I remember once seeing a wine’s nose described as “feral” and I’m going to steal it here because it’s absolutely spot on! I wish I could share it because it’s simply mind blowing! Well worth the price of admission on its own. On the palate, all of the above with notes of cedar, caramel and maple syrup. Pure silk. Great depth and complexity. Opulent and powerful yet light on its feet and positively elegant. Possibly the most hedonistic wine I’ve ever tasted! At least that’s how I feel tonight. In the moment. Perfect confluence of time and place. Endless finish. How long can these SQN beauties continue to sing? There’s no end in sight as far as this guy’s concerned. And I don’t usually do this here, but if anyone out there is sitting on a Magnum they’d be willing to part with, I’m extremely interested. Sine Qua Non. My magnificent obsession! — 7 years ago

We've had probably a case of this wine over the years, and it's always been one of my favorites. Perfect confluence of old vine, ungrafted Tempranillo, farmed biodynamically, and worked with a light touch. I wish I had another case to follow this wine for another decade. — 13 years ago
Very special 2013 vintage ...where the extremely hot summer and heavy rain actually balanced out the wine naturally ...amazing riper/redfruit but the balance of earth to fruit and oak really showcases winemakers ability to create and work in confluence w nature and still create a very special wine...awesome!! Never rated a wine this high. Confluence of smoke, peat , and silk. Whoa!! — 8 years ago
Deep fruit flavors. Not a beginners pinot. Tasted against the Confluence Vineyard. This was darker and deeper flavor and fruit. Started off gummy and mellowed out after 3 hours on nondecanted air. 14.5% alcohol - no joke. Bought this wine to drink with my wife as a way of saying "I'm sorry for being gone all weekend and thank you for watching the kids..." — 9 years ago

Wow!! What a great fruit forward Pinot that has the perfect amount of acidity. Long luscious finish. Really worth seeking out — 10 years ago
A couple of my old textbooks reveal a hidden confluence of factors behind the founders of a perennial favorite of mine. Smooth, balanced tannins and oak, cherry and light pepper flavors. Sadly, this is the last vintage from the old vines at the Unti Vineyard in Sonoma Coiunty’s Dry Creek. Those vines have been ripped out. — 10 years ago
