Shafer Vineyards

Hillside Select Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Shafer HS is an all time favorite of mine but I don't typically open a bottle within 10 years of release. This bottle illustrated why. It's still in its chrysalis--developing and building and gaining weight and shedding tannin. Just not ready even after hours in the decanter. — 8 years ago

Gang: I think this was decanted for less than 2 hours when it was poured. It may have needed more air but it certainly needs more time. I'd hold. I'm not saying it sucks--Shafer Hillside is a superstar. I just recommend the '02 right now not the '10.

Emilien Côtes de Francs Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Tart and little and heavy on merlot. It's like the little cutest girl in school. Definitely a type...just not mine.
To be fair, this is a well put together wine.

Coal River Valley Pinot Noir 2017

2017 vintage. Very fragrant and floral. Little bit of stemmy herbal-ness going on in the nose. Red and purple flowers: hibiscus, lilac, violet, rose petals, raspberry, peach melba, wild strawberry, green tea, lavender, tarragon. Tastes a lot like a good cru Beaujolais. — 7 years ago

Tasmania Pinot Noir 2014

Gorgeous perfume - I could smell this for hours. Medium weight on the palate with those trade mark silky tannins. Noticeable whole bunch influence. Coal River in Tasmania is hot right now for the production of top class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Interestingly the grapes are taken in refrigerated containers to the Adelaide Hills for vinification at Shaw and Smith. — 7 years ago

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe

La Crau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend

After opening a second bottle (first was corked) I was very pleased. This wine was delicious right from the first sip. Beautiful nose of red fruit with strawberry standing out. The wine kept opening throughout my meal at the post hotel in lake Louise. Palate has nice acidity with strawberry from the nose front and centre. Finish is very long with fine balance. Looking forward to trying mine from my cellar — 9 years ago

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

This beautiful 2005 cab was an anniversary gift from a great friend of mine @Jeff Savigny The vintage is the year we got married. The nose is so complex and yet so subdued, it practically blew my mind. A nose full of roses, tobacco, dark fruit and licorice with a hint of molasses and vanilla. On the palate very dry, with a faint aged acidity, yet very rich and delicious. You can spend just as much time smelling this as drinking it. This was a near perfect wine and a great anniversary present! — 11 years ago
