Founded in 1969 by two rocket scientists, ZD takes its name not only from its founders, Norman de Leuze and Gino Zepponi, but also from the engineering term Zero Defects. Sleek in its design, but with serious thrust, comparisons could be made to Corison or Montelena Estate, as well as some Left Bank Châteaux. Tart cranberry, cherry, and plum abound with purity, followed by 70% cacao, fresh pine, and damp cedar. Some secondary coconut oil adds a slightly exotic feel to an otherwise old school, savory-styled Napa Cab. Excellent. 93+ — 8 years ago

The 1983 Wine has a lovely nose, a browning edge to the light-medium red color in a smooth & complex, well balanced wine with relatively low alcohol & a lovely medium to long aftertaste. It still has a few years to go in a cool cellar. — 8 years ago

2004 was an average Bordeaux vintage but the better Châteaux made good wines. This reliable Crû Borgeois was a case in point with nice cassis fruit balanced by judicious oak & a lovely freshness. Pleasing hints of cedar & tobacco creeping in to add complexity. Showing very well for an 11 year old wine. Fab. — 10 years ago
