Interesting red from Emilio Bulfon. For those not familiar with this winery, his goal is to rescue old, nearly extinct Italian grape varietals and bring them back. Most of these grapes were common in Roman times, I believe, so these are pretty cool wines, geekily speaking. This one is pretty rich, but not quite as complete as the picolit neri riserva, which I think is his best. — 9 years ago

1968 R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Condonia Rioja. Drank for family dinner in Napa. We decanted just before white wine was served. At first drank like a beautiful burgundy- raisiny, sweet, with a smooth finish. Unfortunately, the wine petered out a little quickly. Thankfully, we had the 2001 Casanova di Neri Brunello. — 9 years ago

2001 Le Macchiole Messorio Merlot. Compared this wine to the '01 Casanova di Neri Cerretalto Brunello Sangiovese at the lunch which Ash prepared at the house. By a small margin, this wine was our fave of the two. Sweet fruit on the nose, but balanced, and a nice mouthfeel with a pleasant amount of tannins. We really enjoyed how balanced and delicious this wine was. — 9 years ago

Jaw dropping aromatics of chalk and wet stones and buttery croissant unusually pronounced, out of a wider bowled white wine glass than the white wine Zalto I normally use for this. Good to note. Body is medium plus and has great concentration at this price point, due to barrel fermentation and aging. Poor man's Krug basically and that richness I haven't found at a price lower than this. Perfect pairing with 90 day aged beef crudo and perigord truffle tajarin. Neutral acid cut the mild spice and iodine flavor of spaghetti neri and even worked lovely along with zeppoli with lavender cream. — 9 years ago
