2012 saturated, blu/purple, room-filling, earthy spice and fruit aromas. Nearly perfect with classic dolcetto fruit. — 9 years ago
2006. Deep, dark cherry aroma follow with mineral, dust earthiness, hint of vanilla, black pepper comes together...touch of barrique aroma but aroma blended well with fruit and structure. med p body, med p acid, med p intensity, moderate tannin, smooth texture followed with good amount of bitterness, vanilla, white chocolate with dark fig and licorice flavor. long finish with touch of vanilla...modern style nebbiolo aged very well. thinking about veal blanquette. — 10 years ago
Purple and yellow flowers with red berries. Light and lively with bright acid — 10 years ago
A lovely dusty pink copper color. Savoury and bone dry as expected. You would not imagine BS making a bad wine no matter what the grape is. Short term drinking. — 11 years ago
Floral. Mint. Gorgeous purity. — 11 years ago
Smooth soft tannins, pleasant bright cherry notes. Beautiful Sangiovese! Age was drinking just right. — 12 years ago
Sangiovese grosso from Montalcino planted in the Chianti classico area superb! — 12 years ago
This Sangiovese Grosso is thick and leathery and strikingly powerful. Great dark fruit and that smoky boozy length of finish that makes Italian wine so appealing. — 13 years ago
Medium crimson/ruby in colour. A whiff of vanilla oak amongst the earthy aromas. Sandy fine tarry tannins. Thanks to the contribution of Matteo Correggia the Roero now has DOCG status which is why this wine is in the 1001 Wines book. Just medium weight but with 100% new French oak, so a modern approach. Good accompaniment to Roast Pork for Sunday lunch. Drinking well now but would drink the next 2 bottles by its 10th birthday in 2023. Tasted again 48 weeks later on 17 October 2019. Fine powdery Tannins to add to notes above. Oak not as prominent. A nice sweetness to the palate. Went well with home made pizza. — 8 years ago
Light, fresh, bright fruit, and elegant. — 8 years ago
Like a chenin blanc with big hairy balls and a very casual attitude toward showering. — 9 years ago
Im drunk, eating paté, this wine is exactly where it needs to be. Wood chips nd blueberry, this wine exhibits ballanced acidity with great mountain berry fruit alongside present yet unintrusive tannins. Matteo would be proud. — 10 years ago
Lovely at I Sodi — 10 years ago
Darker than traditional barbera — 11 years ago
2004 vintage. Very structure-driven wine. Black fruits of stewed plum, black fig, black cherry, currant, cedar, pencil lead, dried herbs, freshly-turned earth, cloves, dried purple flowers. Really fine-grained tannins that are very drying...surprising for a wine this age. Never would have pegged this for Sangiovese, seemed more like a high-quality Bordeaux variety. — 11 years ago
Time and vintage have inevitably ranked the 07' superior to the 08'. Acid and tannin are settled allowing for the true richness and of Sangiovese Grosso to be expressed. Spice and earth on the nose, but rich semi stewy cherry fruit on the palate. If you see the 07' somewhere grab two for now and later! — 11 years ago
Too hot. Otherwise great — 12 years ago
1997, holla! Gorgeous wine! Perfect sangio grosso! Drinking superbly well! — 13 years ago
16.5/20 (90/100) Приятный, немного ликёрный аромат в котором доминируют тона вишни и ванили. Высокая кислотность и интенсивные танины. Тона выдержки в бочке становятся более очевидными во вкусе. Очень хорошо. — 8 years ago
Light, crisp, fresh. — 8 years ago

Holiday vino! This little beauty came in my last shipment from Foxen, one of my favorite producers in Santa Barbara county. The Guillermo Grasso is Foxen’s take on a new world Tuscan - a 50:50 Sangiovese (Faith Vineyard)-Cabernet Sauvignon (Vogelzang Vineyard). 22 months in French Oak - 40% new - gives this wine a hefty punch of tannin and body. While the Vogelzang Vineyard is well known for producing wonderfully complex Cabernet, I’m not as familiar with Faith Vineyard - however a quick Google search shows that the Vineyard, located in Santa Ynez, specializes in Sangiovese and Sauvignon Blanc on a 7 acre plot. Though Foxen recommends cellaring this one for a few years to mellow out - I’m drinking it early. Paired with fish tacos. ~$35 | #foxen #santaynezvalley #supertuscan
On the eyes: Deep, concentrated blood red, bright - but hazy (unfined and unfiltered), med+ stain, med+ tears, no gas.
On the nose: Strawberry, cherry, rose hips, pencil shavings, tobacco, and a bit of earthy funk. Med+ alcohol.
On the tongue: Med+ acid, med+ tannin, med+ alcohol, full body, firm and tight. Red currants, raspberry, floral high notes, cigar box, and worn leather. A bit cloying and rambunctious - it would benefit from a year or two in the cellar, but still very yummy! Decant it and enjoy! Merry Christmas! — 8 years ago
Exceptional and pure immediately come to mind and are affirmed over 2-3 hours. This is Sangiovese Grosso in a very Burgundian, transparent and very pure expression.
A new producer of sorts, the earliest wines were in 2006 under this label from what I recall.
Being my first Stella the color is uncommonly lighter for a Brunello than you would expect.
The nose is pure, with elegant raspberry and strawberry fruits that meld with Earthy minerality, mushroom and spice into a beautiful, sensual perfume.
The palate continues the purity party, marrying a persistence and depth that reminds me again of Burgundy. A long finish carries the fruit, fresh acids and the fine, supple tannin.
As great as it is now, will it reach even more heights? Only time will tell.
