Bonneau du Martray

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Chardonnay 2007

mply gorgeous young Corton Charlie. The density is amazing, yet there is a lightness or litheness to this wine, beautifully balanced. The fruit is ripe and layered citrus, acidity well-woven into the wine. Reminds me of a young 85 vintage of this wine and is a near head-spinning young BdM. Plagued by premox, I have cut back my purchases of this wine that used to be an annual purchase, but I sure found a great bottle tonight. The wine is electric. — 9 years ago

A nice contrast to the Lapierre, cut from the same structural cloth but full of sun-kissed California fruit. Good now with a decant, ought to be great a couple years. Deeeeee-licious! — 10 years ago

Cristal Brut Champagne Chardonnay Pinot Noir Blend 1985

Delectable Wine
9.5

The 1985 Cristal is powerful and resonant on the palate, with just the earliest hints of oxidative notes starting to appear. The 1985 may not have quite the layers, focus or pedigree of the very best years, but it more than makes up for that with its inviting, generous personality. There is so much to like, including the wine’s soft curves and racy feel. The 1985 is an especially opulent Cristal, with attractive smoky and torrefaction overtones, and exceptional balance. “In 1985, we had a severe frost that lowered yields dramatically,” Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon recounted. “It was a vintage to handle carefully. From what the old-timers told me, because I was not here, set was so bad that the percentage of stems relative to fruit was quite high. Our crew works hard to cut as close as possible, especially in challenging vintages. But I imagine some stems and underripe berries made it into the tanks, resulting in somewhat green, bitter flavors at pressing. In the end though, those qualities have been pretty good for aging. Ultimately, Champagne is a battle between ripeness and greenness. If you are too ripe, you have rot, and if you aren’t ripe enough, you are green. You need to find the optimal window for picking.” (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, December 2018) — 6 years ago

Dark and full bodied, this wine brings on the darkness fruits: black plumb, dark cherry, black currant. It has relatively high acidity so should pair well with oily dishes. — 9 years ago

I miss the rusticity of the past, but there's no denying that this is cleverly made. Sweet, grainy and accessible tannins, pure cherry fruit, hints of blackberries and freshly cut oregano; this is nicely updated. I like it a lot, but there's just something missing... — 10 years ago
