Les Crayères du Levant Brut Nature Meunier 2017

A winemaker whom I first discovered at the one and only Au Bon Manger in Reims during a trip to Champagne, one to watch, Aurelien Lurquin. Unsurprisingly, his wines have all but disappeared in states. While my favorite cuvée will likely always be his 100% Meunier, Crayeres du Levant, 100% Pinot Noir Les Forcières is a gorgeous BdN. It’s powerful, rich and mineral with super floral aromatics and a stunningly luxurious texture. A beautiful young Champagne that there will simply never be enough of! — a year ago

New to me.

Jérôme Prévost

La Closerie Les Béguines Extra Brut Champagne Pinot Meunier

The new “Esperluette” cuvée. In the words of Jérôme Prévost, “For this cuvée, we are still 100% Pinot Meunier, always 100% from the terroir of Gueux.  20% reserve wine 2017 completed with 80% wine from harvest 2018, 20% of which is from Béguines. We work some of these vines ourselves, in the same spirit and with the same touch as in Les Béguines.”

My first time tasting this cuvée. There is such singularity to his wines and really I don’t think anyone can match what Prevost is doing with 100% Pinot Meunier. Although, I definitely want to try Aurelien Lurquin. As with the Béguines, it’s so terroir expressive, supported by bruised stone fruit, baking spices and riveting energy and tension. It needs a great deal of air to really show its stuff and then it is truly oh so giving.

This was easily 9.3 or 9.4 on day 2. I just didn’t leave enough to give a true assessment….Thanks @Lyle Fass for a great St. Joseph! — 2 years ago

Laherte Frères

Extra Brut Champagne Rosé De Pinot Meunier

A very pretty champagne in a very pretty package. A beautiful light salmon color. Preciously precise miniature bubbles and a nose that’s as fresh as it is generous. Rose petals and strawberries. Wet soil, dried cherries, and chalk. Blood oranges show after some air along with vanilla and spice.

When people ask me what is my favorite rosé, the answer is always unequivocally this lovely 100% Meunier from Aurelien Laherte. Biodynamic and natural, the purity of fruit here is undeniable. Use your big glasses to really give this to space to breathe and you’ll be rewarded. Low dosage of 2.5 but honestly you’ll never feel it. It’s so harmonious and so drinkable that a bottle never really lasts long.

Exquisite in the mouth showcasing its vinous nature and charm. More robust fruit on the palate along with salinity and subtle spice. High acidity but not searing with plenty of body. Seriously, just buy these anytime you see them. However many you have just isn’t enough.

Pierre Gerbais

Grains de Celles Pinot Noir Rosé Champagne Blend

Just take a look at this color. So striking. So sexy. Nice perlage and cream. The nose is so crisp and fresh. Pears and lively red cherries alongside mangoes. Freshly baked bread aromas are very nice here, as well are the grapefruit and strawberry.

Yet another young hotshot champagne maker, Aurelien Gerbais from the Aube. A friend and neighbor of Cédric Bouchard and that’s all you need to know. 50/25/25 PN/CH/Pinot Blanc with an extra brut dosage of 3 g/l. The low dosage avoids the trap of being austere, but rather it’s an inviting and gracious Rosé. The addition of 10% Coteaux Champenois Pinot Noir gives it that beautifully sexy color and viscosity.

Dry with breathtaking acidity, the terroir really speaks here. The palate follows the nose with more summer berries and light yeast. So lovely, so sleek. Good sex in a bottle. If you see these, get them.

Gorgeous precise nose. Clay, graphite, mineral as all can be. Some gamey, wild feral note as well but also profound blackberry and red berry fruit. Gorgeous nose. Complex and concentrated with loads of minerals and full dry yet ripe tannins. Finishes with loads of granite and graphite and juicy fruit hints. Needs 45 minutes but it is all there. — 4 years ago
