Excellent Malbec. — 6 years ago
(15% alcohol; the wine's Malbec component comes from a 1998 planting in Gualtallary, the Cabernet Franc from Altamira): Saturated ruby. Knockout vibrant nose combines dark berries, licorice and violet; already conveying a strong impression of personality. Densely packed and intense but quite fine-grained, offering terrific delineation to its flavors of crushed black fruits and violet. This very backward wine finishes with serious but suave tannins, terrific length and excellent energy and cut. I'd like to revisit this in six or seven years, at which time it may merit an even higher score. (Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, July 2018) — 7 years ago
Deep violet core with magenta rim. Blackberry, plum, and milk chocolate on the nose with hints of violets. Plush and round on the palate with juicy dark fruit and sweets tannins. Nice blend of Catena's best vineyards Angélica (Lunlunta), La Pirámide (Agrelo), Nicasia (Altamira), and Adrianna (Gualtallary). — 8 years ago
Luscious steeped blackberries, marionberries, and dusky Italian plums lie well beneath lighter, more enigmatic aromas of violets, dust, and dark chocolate shavings. Seed's 2014 Paraje Altamira Malbec is mulberry-hued at the rim and deliciously fresh. The nose echoes the palate, with saturating black fruit at the core, neatly hemmed in by mouth-coating, ripe tannins. It's a subtle, elegant Malbec—one that gently wends its way to a slightly spicy, herbaceous close of green peppercorn, dried rosemary, bay leaf. — 9 years ago

medium ruby, prominent glass staining tears; blackberry, bitter dark chocolate, violets, herbs; sappy red berry fruit, long finish; full bodied, medium+ acidity, surprising tannic grip, medium grained, 14% ABV; made from 100% Malbec sourced from granitic soil blocks of Catena Zapata’s two historic vineyards Adrianna (Gualtallary) and Nicasia (Altamira) in the Uco valley — 5 years ago

Very clean with red berries, nice perfume. High acidity, savoury wine. — 6 years ago
On the nose, ruby, ripe and almost liqueur fruits; blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, black plum, dark chocolate; great baking spices, loamy clay, spice, dark moist soils, black licorice and fresh dark floral with violets.
On the palate, the body is full. The tannins and dusty and just a touch sticky. Beautiful but needs to age. ruby, ripe fruits; blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, black plum, dark chocolate is crazy good; great baking spices, loamy clay, spice, dark moist soils, black licorice and fresh dark floral with violets.
Photos of, another side of their Estate vines, very old gnarly vine and olives trees waiting to be picked as soon as their done with processing the 18 vintage.

The Finca Remota Vineyard is located in Altamira, Valle de Uco at 1,040 meter of elevation. The vineyard has a sandy- loam and stony soil, very loose of alluvial origin. The climate is cold in winter with occasional snowfall, and temperate in summer with cold nights, which provides the region with a great thermal amplitude daily. The average annual rainfall is just under 6 inches. Our “Semillon” and “Malbec Finca Remota” are produced from grapes grown in the oldest and smallest part of this vineyard planted in 1947. It has superficial irrigation and a traditional management of the crop. It is conducted in low French trolley system and the yield is lower than 4 tons. per hectares. The rest of the vineyard receives a modern management: the vines are conducted in medium height French trolley system and it has drip irrigation. In this vineyard there are 8 hectares of Malbec, 3 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, 2 hectares of Semillon, 2 hectares of Cabernet Franc and 2 hectares of Petit Verdot. — 7 years ago
100% single vineyard called La Trinidad in Altamira. Planted in 2006. Fantastic 'naked' expression of Malbec. — 9 years ago
For sure the best Malbec I have ever tasted, concentrated and powerfully serious but the feel was velvety and not clunky with oak. Really a lovely wine- thanks for sharing Casey! — 10 years ago

We recently pulled some cases out of storage, which haven't seen the light of day for nearly 15 years, so I'll have some fun posts in the next several months.
Nose has split oak firewood (barely seasoned), cigar box, moist cedar shavings, blackberry, dried black currant, dried roses, fresh violets, moist leather, dried lavender dark chocolate powder and graphite pencil shavings.
Palate has chocolate covered blackberry, tarry black cherry, cedar sawdust, dark chocolate bark, prune, anise candy, clay pot and leather. Very long finish, subtle tannins exist still, amazing wine!
Cork pulled, 2h rest, then decanted 6h, a perfect bottle, still young, future bottles may be 2023-30, without concern.

Perfect pair to homemade burgers from a local farmer in Columbia Co. NY (Kinderhook Farm), cooked to a beautiful medium-rare served on toasted brioche burger rolls. — 5 years ago
Fragrant strawberries on the nose, rich red fruit combined with fresh minerals on the palate, lightly spiced, dry, with a medium finish. Firm and clean, overall an excellent blend of Malbecs from neighbouring areas. — 5 years ago
2013 vintage. Opened on 31st July 2019. Great wine. Oaky nose and dark berries scent after few days opening. Raisin taste with sweetness of grapes, and dark chocolate. Long finishing. — 6 years ago
(14.6% alcohol; just 15% new oak; 100% from estate vines, about three-quarters from the rockiest portion of the company's Las Compuertas vineyard and the rest from Altamira): Bright ruby-red. Very fresh black and blue fruits, menthol, spices and licorice on the nose and palate, complicated by mint, minerals and medicinal herbs (the Cabernet Sauvignon is apparent here). Still a baby but already displays a Malbec juiciness and firm underlying structure. Suave in texture, offering noteworthy delicacy and clarity. Winemaker Lorenzo Pasquini cut back substantially on new oak in 2014 (he normally uses 30% to 50%) and used only French barrels. Not a large-scaled wine but refreshing, suave, complex and intense, with lovely cut. Finishes with excellent spicy length, round tannins and hints of licorice and black olive.
