Another lovely and lively California sparkler from a vertical tasting of Gloria Ferrer's Royal Cuvée Bruts. The 2001 is as charming as the other vintages I've tried, though it shows an evolution in the house's style—a trend toward a lighter, slightly softer, fruitier bubbly. On the palate the 2014 Raptor Ridge Pinot Gris is equally tender and round, held aloft by a delicate vein of acidity that provides just enough lift. The newly-released 2004 Gloria Ferrer Carneros Cuvée is a lively blend of 53% Pinot Noir and 47% Chardonnay. I spent a full day touring the facility and estate vineyards and was impressed by the care and labor that goes in to crafting their sparkling wines. The 2004 displays ripe red fruit and pleasing biscuit notes held aloft in a creamy stream of bubbles. On the palate, it's fresh and vibrant, I'd love to revisit this after its had time to further develop. 12.5% ABV | Sample — 9 years ago

Truly a wonderful Lirac, everything you expect from the area, dark fruit riding aloft an oak staved hull. Salinity, bramble, precise and focused, a shame one of the brothers passed. A great winery, truly the forerunner of Tavel.

I drank. at night. And in the morning I had arrived in heaven still in a stupor after the nights drinking in a ponder at how I'd arrived in heaven by following , head down , eyes drawn tight, lead along by all the empty and tossed Pinot noir bottles lining the path like guide posts left by others also on their way aloft to heaven which turns out to be through the gate of the cellar door shown above. — 9 years ago

Amazing depth and clarity of fruit from nose to palate. Smells range from coffee-tar to mushroom mulch and black cherry au jus. Lovely cherry blossom notes intermingle with rose water. The tannins are big initially, but harmonize rapidly in the glass. The drying sensation in no way detracts from the fruit which is bright plum and melange of cherries including bing finishing with aloft raspberry pillow. The balance is there, the stony, schisty minerality, and the oak is perfect, allowing the wine to speak in all its elegant Chiantese! Muscle for the money!! Feed this beauty something earthy, beefy or both! — 9 years ago

This was such a surprise as to how lively it was after 17 years. I would never expect that from Napa Zin, but there you have it! It was such a beautiful and complex wine. Light red fruit held aloft by an earthy undercurrent and even some residual acidity. — 11 years ago
