Pio Cesare

Barolo Nebbiolo 2010

2010 a strong vintage & still accending. Costco Ribcap vs Allen Brothers.

Sofia & I stayed in downtown Alba in 2015. Arrived early evening & sadly after their big wine festival. Pio Cesare was around the corner and down two blocks from our hotel. Historic as hell.

I bought this at Costco for around $49.

Nebbiolo young is a huge tarry grape. The Italian’s ferment this with a lot of new wood. They actually hold Nebbiolo/Barolo in bottle and extra year or more before release. Also, longer than most other world regions based largely on the grape & even more their wood use.

This is drinking nicely after a four hour decant, but it is still ascending and another 10-15 years of good drinking ahead…properly stored.

Even with this age, its tarriness is the first descriptor. Followed by heated dark spices, slightly, dry b lackberries, dry, slight tart, dark cherries, black raspberries, black plum, some strawberries, tea leaves, black licorice to anise, sandstone, limestone, dry crushed rocks, dry top soil & brush, dry herbs, dry tobacco, light; clove, nutmeg & hints of vanillin, forest floor w/ dry leaves, some mint, dry, withering, dark, red flowers framed in violets, excellent acidity with a nicely evolved, well; structured, tensioned, balanced, smartly polished finished that goes on & on!

Barolo 2019. Great. Very dry. Not super complex. Great after a soccer game and ballet recital with the parents and in-laws. Dry with a good taste profile. Opened and let sit for 2 hours. Gone shortly after. — 7 days ago

Bricco delle Viole Barolo Nebbiolo 2020

Light reddish in color with light intensity, and fresh red fruits on the nose.

Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity.

Dry on the palate with mild complexity.

Showing red currants, cherries, strawberries light wood, spices, coffee and dark chocolates.

Tangy finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a delicious Barolo. Still very young and needs time to mature properly.

Elegant and rich. Fresh, easy drinking, and already enjoyable, even by itself. Showing nice complexity and mouthfeel.

Needs time to open up properly, so be patient. Good by itself or with food.

Would be nice to revisit it in 10 years.

100% Nebbiolo grapes were grown at 1,200 feet of elevation. Vines are 40 to 90 year old vines. Aged for 42 months in large Slavonian wood barrels.

Dark brick in color.

Pretty nose of stewed red fruits, light oak, spices, caramel, sweet chocolates notes, smoked meat and black pepper.

Light to medium in body with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with raspberries, sweet cherries, cooked plums, earth, light forest floor, tobacco leaf, herbs and light black pepper.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy strawberries.

This 42 year old Barolo is just gorgeous now. Drinking beautifully with great complexity and mouthfeel. Elegant and rich. Well balanced and powerful.

Feels like it still has power in it to last even longer, although I don't see it getting much better from this point on. Will continue to drink nicely in the next 5 to 10 years.

Easy drinking right out of the bottle, and good by itself as a sipping wine. Still showing great acidity and feels vibrant and very much alive. Delicious, powerful and delectable.

This is a wonderful experience. I just love tasting these kind of aged wines.

100% Nebbiolo grapes were aged for 12 months in cement vats and then for 5 years in Slavonian oak barrels.

14% alcohol by volume.

Cannubi Boschis Barolo Nebbiolo 2007

A tawny edge when swirled. First impressions - a powerful wine. “A Man’s Wine”… (you can only get away with that these days if you’re over 70!). Tannins have calmed in 17 years. Menthol, liquorice, earth and balsamic notes. Full bodied with finer grained tannins developing. Tasting this - many years left in the drinking window. From an excellent Barolo vintage. I might leave the last 07 until 20 years old in 2027. — 22 days ago

It’s amazing to experience how the flower opened up and radiated over all these years.

Riserva Monfortino Barolo Nebbiolo 2008

Second bottle from this vintage that I have enjoyed but this one I purchased from a local wine shop. Opened very nicely after 2.5 hours and enjoyed over 5 hours. Cherry notes were bursting through but mature and deep. Blended wonderfully with the earthiness. This wine is still a baby and think I will do my best to sit on my remaining 2008s for at least 5 more years. — a day ago

Serralunga d'Alba Barolo Nebbiolo 2000

Decanted about two hours before service which, remarkably, ended up still not being enough time. Day 1 was more of an educational experience; a showcase of the 2000 vintage if you will. The fruit was stewed and tertiary and while the structure was there, it seemed out of balance and sort of a mess. Only half of the bottle was remaining and nearly just dumped. However, I decided to hold the remaining half bottle for the next day. Day 2 was different as the fruit actually brightened up and everything came into better balance. All I can say is, Nebbiolo is truly a fascinating grape. Notes are from Day 2. The 2000 Classico pours a garnet color with a slightly cloudy core moving to an orange rim. Medium+ viscosity with some sediment and no staining. On the nose, the wine is vinous with stewed red and black fruits, dried roses, tar, espresso, earth, cigar paper, leather, and brown caramel crumble. On the palate, the wine is dry with high tannin and medium acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and savory. The time is now. Drink now with a lengthy decant. — 14 days ago
