Kongsgaard

Napa Valley Chardonnay 2019

9.3

Annual birthday WWC hosting. As normal, 1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds, 1 dessert, all presented blind.

As part of my white wine flight theme, I wanted to compare Hyde and Hudson side by side, then finish with Kongsgaard, since it is a blend of both.

Similar to the Hudson before it, I normally like to drink Kongsgaard on the young side, and also similar to the Hudson, on this day…it didn’t seem to have the typical opulent/massive profile. White peach and apricot upfront as well as sweet cotton candy on the nose. Ripe yellow and tropical fruits dominate the palate with sea salt, ginger and lemon cream. Faint note of butterscotch, but not near the amount I’ve found previous vintages to show. What Kongsgaard does well is have a wine of this profile but somehow find a way to have elegant qualities about it. Decant or hold a few years.

This has something for everyone. Zippy fruit, yeasty, and good depth. Best part is it isn’t crazy expensive for a comparative bottle — 2 months ago

La Grande Dame Brut Champagne Blend 2004

Popped and poured to celebrate a pretty cool personal and professional achievement; enjoyed over a two hour period. This particular bottle has been stored in my cellar since release. The 2004 “La Grande Dame” pours a brilliant yellow color with medium+ viscosity and a persistent mousse of fine bubbles. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of golden raspberry, Meyer lemon, some apple, some brioche and nuts; just a touch oxidative. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. However, I feel compelled to share that this gave me the overall impression of a sort of liquid lemon-raspberry custard croissant with shaved almonds on top. It was awesome. The finish was long and there is some palpable density in this wine. So much so that I think these easily have another 10-15 years in them. That being said, this was yummy and I wouldn’t hesitate to enjoy now. — 2 months ago

Brut Champagne Blend 1988

Tasting group meet up with many of the regulars not able to attend . I knew the organizer invited someone whom we had not tasted with in about 15 years . He certainly made an entrance bringing this, in magnum no less. When poured it showed a fine mousse but it faded quickly. A very broad nose that hinted of some age. In the mouth it was like a sports car traveling a highway. Almond , brioche and some oxidative notes sped thru my mouth. The flavors accelerated only to linger similar to when you take your foot off the accelerator. Coasted effortlessly with no need to step on the brakes — 2 months ago

I was fortunate to have this a year or two ago (in 750) and was completely spellbound. I’d like to find one for myself one of these days.

Dom Pérignon

Brut Champagne Rosé 2008

#AgedWineTuesday

Orange in color, very pretty and unique.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity and medium sized bubbles.

Dry on the palate with a nice mouthfeel.

Showing green apples, light grapefruits, yeast, light raspberries, citrus, limes, light earth, minerals and herbs.

This 16 year old is showing nice complexity at this point, and will continue to age nicely the next 10 years.

Good right out of the bottle, and better with airtime.

Dom Perignon is not my favorite Champagne, but this one is really delicious. I got to call it when I see it.

Wine Spectator 97 points. Robert Parker 97 points.

Elegant and robust. I just love this vintage for Dom Perignon.

A blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

12.5% alcohol by volume.

93 points.

$500.

At Oginos post Thanksgiving. Thumbs up! 35/65 Chardonnay/Pinot Noir and it shows, creamy almost velvety texture tingling with fine bubbles. 5.5g dosage. 40/60 2012/2013 harvest, disgorged 1-2016. All on back label! — 6 months ago

Ruinart

Brut Rosé Champagne

Very fine mousse but it disappears really quickly.
Strawberries and cream on the nose very vividly. Sweet whipped cream is almost turning into condensed milk. Raspberry, very ripe peach, coissant woth strawberry jam. All sorts of strawberry associations really :)
On the palette mousse slowly fills the mouth, pretty dry on the finish. Brioche, pear, red apple, confiture.

La Grande Année Brut Champagne Blend 1996

From magnum, the 1996 Grande Année pours a brilliant pale gold color with a persistent mousse. Initially, the wine showed more oxidative notes but it freshened up considerably with air (in fact, a tiny amount was leftover for the next morning and it remained brilliant, racy even!). On the nose, notes of almond, citrus, honey, chalky minerals and brioche. On the palate, wine is developing with absolutely brilliant acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and zippy. The 1996 vintage is simply amazing. Here we are, 28 years past vintage and this bright and full of life! Granted, it’s a magnum, but still. Drink now with patience or enjoy through 2046+. — 3 months ago
